Nokia MiniMO – Calling all future filmmakers!

Hi there,

I’m getting in contact with you as I’m working on a project that could be a lot of fun and be beneficial to you and your students.

My name is Matt and I’m working as the community manager and blogger for the recently launched Nokia MiniMO competition.

Across the UK, we are asking people, especially film buffs and students, to remake their favourite movie scenes, ideally using their mobile but that’s not compulsory. The winning submitter will win a trip for two to Cannes and £1,300 worth of director’s kit, plus there’s a host of other great film prizes up for grabs.

We already have some great efforts entered on the Nokia MiniMO website, where members of the community can vote on their favourite reenactment: http://nokiaminimo.com

I’m also looking after the blog [http://nokiaminimo.com/blog] where we’re hosting a selection of short ‘tips and tricks’ videos we’ve produced to help future MiniMO entrants. Alongside the videos, we’re also running weekly competitions via Nokia UK’s Twitter feed with prizes varying from a van load of props to a C-list celebrity to feature in your entry!

It would be fantastic if you could pass this on to your film-loving pals and contacts. If you have any questions or need anything at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Final Marks

You should all have got your finals marks by now. Overall you have all done very well in understanding and, very importantly, applying the principles of researching for media production. The vast majority were able to find a good character and a story to tell which is key to a successful media artifact. Over the next term their needs to be a focus on technical development outside of the module structure so form yourselves into groups and try to make another film as soon as possible. If anyone needs advice on this then book in a tutorial with me.

A small number of you were not at the Feedback Sessions and you will find your individual grade as well as detailed feedback and advice sheet held in the office in ET for you to collect.

Its been a very active module which most of who have enjoyed and many of you have really developed your research skills so well done to all of you and best of luck for next term.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

This is the Assessment Schedule for Thursday 18th March. As well as the times listed you need to be available to give group feedback on the production that follows you so you must remain in the ET building until you are called. You will be told as soon as possible after your assessment when you can leave. If your name is not on the list you must contact Ken Fero urgently. Attendance at the Assessment is required for everyone and you will lose marks if you are not present.

Deliverables

Deliverables on this module are as follows:

Media Artefact (50%)
The 3-minute documentary that you will produce and use in your presentation will be assessed according to whether it has met the assignment brief. We will consider how the production represents your understanding of the importance of the research skills that you have been taught. You must follow the module production guidelines (release forms, copyright, and all permissions sought and signed).

Final Presentation (20%)
Your ability to produce a presentation that is clear, coherent and within the brief. Including evidence of personal development and exploration. This should be presented in your team.

Individual workbook (30%)
Blogs should be well prepared and presented. They must include regular and appropriate reflection as directed over the course of the module. The blog will be used to evaluate individual student’s involvement in the group work.

Coursework Submission

Your coursework will be submitted to Reception in the Ellen Terry Building between 10.00am AND 12.00PM THURSDAY 18TH MARCH 2010. Your coursework should have a cover sheet (available from Reception) affixed to the front sheet. You should also make sure that you sign the sheet to confirm that you have submitted your work. The deadline for blog entries is 12.00PM blog entries after this deadline will be disregarded.

Each group should submit work their work in a sturdy A3 plastic pouch (available from the GS Art Shop) with the names of each group member clearly visible. This should contain as a minimum:

• three copies of your artefact: one on DV tape, one on DVD and one low-res version on CD
• the group production file
• the individual blog addresses

Please note: The staff in Reception have been instructed that these times should be rigidly adhered to and no-one, for whatever reason, will be allowed to submit work outside these times.

Tutorials

The Russell Tribunal on Palestine

You may recall that guest lecturer Ewa Jasiewicz mentioned the Russell Tribunal on Palestine in which she is involved. For those of you who are interested, the first session was held in Barcelona from 1 to 3 March 2010. In the tradition of the preceding Russell Tribunals, first on Vietnam (launched by Lord Bertrand Russell in 1966) and then on Latin America, this initiative is an authentic peoples’ tribunal aimed at generating public awareness of the serious and recurrent violations of human rights in Palestine.

Above is a video of film maker Ken Loach (Director of ‘Cathy Come Home’ – 1964 and ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’ – 2006) who makes some interesting references to the same issues that we have debated during the early workshops. The London session is planned for the end of 2010 and would be an opportunity for filming an interesting report on the Tribunal. http://www.russelltribunalonpalestine.net/

Week 8 – Archive Usage

This weeks lecture should make you aware of the need to have a Archive License Agreement for any stills or footage included in your final 3 minute film. Remember that you are limited to using archive for only 10% of your 3 minute film.

Week 7 Blog Assignment – Reflection 3

Write up in a critical way how your research has developed into production here are some guidelines:

Research Production
- How has your research changed during the production process.
- Evaluation of the shooting of the production and your role within it.

This must be no more than 300 words + 4 images and is due before Workshop 8 on Thursday 4th March.
